College burn above Southernknowe
Coldburn walks. We left the cottage and followed the road up stream into the Lambden valley and then across to Dunsdale. From here we worked our way down the bank opposite the road until we came level with Coldburn. From there we struck uphill into the plantation to meet the forest road which took us down to the College burn above Southernknowe and Sutherland bridge. In May the water was low and we paddled across. We sat beside the river to have a picnic and marvelled at the empty valley, so quiet and peaceful.
Views
There is one main view, from the lounge or kitchen onto the garden and then towards the Cheviot itself.
This top picture was taken in the field just beyond the stone wall. The snow is on the Bizzle and Dunsdale house is just out of sight to the left of the trees.
and here is the view from within the garden
Enclosed garden
The enclosed garden is one of the special points at Coldburn.
The two images below were taken before the leaves came out so you can see the extent of the garden. The stone walls are reasonably secure. An agile and determined dog would probably climb them but realistically you are safe here. There are occasionally sheep in the field nearby but we have never had any trouble.
You will often see pheasant and grouse as well as smaller birds come into the garden.
There are willow trees and honeysuckle here as well.
